The Park of the Prato leading us to the Fortress
Located in the upper part of the Old Town of Arezzo, with the majestic Medici Fortress overlooking it, the Parco del Prato represents one of the most fascinating places in the city, offering guests of our Bed & Breakfast “Cento Passi dal Duomo” unique opportunities for relaxation and serenity. Open to the public since the 19th century, as evidenced by the presence of centuries-old trees, the park is known for the characteristic pine tree located at the entrance to the Fortress. It is a place loved by both tourists and residents of Arezzo, frequently chosen as a setting for cultural events and performances.
During the first weekend in September, the Antiques Fair takes place here, transforming the Prato into a magical journey through time, enriched by the shadows of large trees and the echo of drums in the distance.
Approaching the Prato through the stairs of the Duomo, one is greeted by the statue of Francesco Petrarca, created by Alessandro Lazzerini in 1928, which introduces one to the historical and cultural richness of the place, leading towards the remains of the Medici Fortress.
The Medici Fortress
A few steps from the “Cento Passi Dal Duomo,” just beyond the Prato Park, one discovers the 16th-century Medici Fortress, an architectural marvel set in the historic center. This defensive structure has gone through moments of destruction and reconstruction over the centuries, starting with its first construction in 1319. The present fortress, with its pentagonal shape, is the result of the work of Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and Nanni Unghero, who between 1538 and 1560 built the work following the original Sangallo drawings.
The fortress today offers an evocative tour of the remains of the past, including underground tunnels and signs of 19th-century explosions. Recently restored, it has become a point of interest for its views and archaeological finds, including a Roman mosaic.
