Cento Passi dal Duomo B&B is located in the heart of the Old Town of Arezzo. In fact, as our name suggests, we are one hundred steps from the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Donato. The center of Arezzo stretches around us in all its beauty, making us one of the best facilities in the city to fully enjoy the attractions there.

A walk in the Old Town of Arezzo
A simple walk in the center of Arezzo is like a visit to a museum of medieval and Renaissance history. In fact, a stone’s throw from us you will find, in addition to the Cathedral, the beautiful Medici Fortress, or the splendid Piazza Grande. Not to mention the Basilica of San Domenico and the beauty of Piazza San Francesco.
You can explore Via di Corso Italia , where you will find the beautiful Church of Santa Maria della Pieve, and from there move through the alleys that characterize the city center. It’s possible to have easy access to our museums and find many excellent restaurants around us to enjoy the specialties of our typically Tuscan cuisine.
In the heart of the Old Town but very close to your parking lot!
Reaching us then is very easy! The Duomo, in fact, is right in front of the exit of a handy covered escalator that will take you downtown directly from one of the best parking lots in the city. This is the Pietri Parking Lot, located on Via Pietri , where you will find a large area of free parking as well as a section of paid lots. Parking at Pietri is therefore ideal for getting to our Bed and Breakfast with extreme peace and ease.

In Arezzo you can admire the Basilica of San Francesco, where the “Legend of the True Cross,” a work completed by Maestro Piero della Francesca, is kept. You will then find the House Museum of Giorgio Vasari, a Master of Arezzo origins who designed the wonderful Loggiato in Piazza Grande. Then don’t miss Cimabue’s Crucifix , kept in the Basilica of San Domenico!

Let’s begin our tour of the Old Town of Arezzo from the place that inspired the name of our Bed and Breakfast: the Cathedral. This imposing religious building dedicated to Saints Peter and Donatus dates back to 1203. That year, in fact, Pope Innocent III decided to move the cathedral from the Pionta Hill inside the city walls. Immerse yourself in the historic atmosphere of the cathedral, starting with its neo-Gothic architecture and facade, whose partial reconstruction is the result of the creative genius of Dante Viviani. It was Viviani, in fact, who in 1901 transformed it into a sandstone masterpiece adorned with elaborate sculptures. The right side of the cathedral retains traces of the 14th century, offering a fascinating contrast between ancient and modern architecture.
An Artistic Journey Inside the Duomo
Upon entering the cathedral, you will be greeted by a spectacular interior. There are three naves divided by majestic ogival arches and illuminated by artistic rose windows. Most notably the one on the facade, by Guillaume de Marcillat, depicting Pentecost. At the center of the polygonal apse, the 14th-century Ark of St. Donatus awaits you with its marble magnificence, a tribute to the city’s patron saint. Don’t miss the hexagonal baptistery in the left aisle, adorned with reliefs dating from the school of Donatello. And for Renaissance art lovers, Piero della Francesca’s Magdalene, a masterpiece of light and form, will leave you breathless. The Basilica of St. Francesco in Arezzo is also located in the heart of the Old Town of Arezzo. This Church was elevated to a minor basilica in 1955 by Pope Pius XII, and is a real treasure in a mixture of art and spirituality. Founded by the Franciscans, who settled in Arezzo in 1211, the basilica finds its origins in the mid-13th century. That year the friars decided to build a church that would reflect their growing prestige. The initial plans for the convent complex, among the oldest in Italy, date from the late 13th and early 14th centuries. Projects for this church are attributed to Fra Giovanni da Pistoia. Construction of the church began in the second decade of the 14th century, with the main chapel completed in 1374. Over the centuries the basilica underwent major transformations, taking on Baroque features in the seventeenth century. These features were later removed during a restoration in the nineteenth century that brought to light the fourteenth- and fifteenth-century frescoes.
A Casket of Works of Art
The interior of the basilica, characterized by a single nave covered with trusses, houses a wealth of Renaissance and late Gothic art. Among the most famous works are Piero della Francesca‘s “Legend of the True Cross“. The “stories” cycle of frescoes located in the Bacci Chapel, restored in 1992. In addition to this masterpiece, the basilica is adorned with numerous frescoes, including those by Spinello Aretino. We must not forget his followers , Lorentino d’Andrea and Niccolò Soggi. The counter façade features frescoes from various periods, including those by Giovanni d’Agnolo di Balduccio and Giovanni di Ser Giovanni known as “lo Scheggia”. Guasconi Chapel and the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua, decorated by Spinello Aretino and Lorentino d’Andrea respectively, are other examples of the basilica’s abundant artistic heritage. The Medici Fortress of Arezzo, located on the Hill of San Donato, is a magnificent example of defensive military architecture from the 16th century. This pentagonal structure, perfectly integrated into the city walls, stands imposingly on top of the Prato Park. The place offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city, the Arno valley, the Pratomagno massif and the Alpe di Catenaia. Built to resist and dominate, the fortress is a powerful symbol of the Medici era, once marked by conflict and power struggles.
A Journey Through the Centuries
The history of the Medici Fortress probably begins on the site of an ancient medieval citadel, possibly dating back to the 9th or 10th century. Its history is punctuated by destruction and reconstruction. In 1319 works to fortify the city led to the construction of the Cassero di San Donato. This structure suffered severe damage during the revolts against Bishop Guido Tarlati. After a series of demolitions and reconstructions, the fortress took its present form between 1538 and 1560 by order of Cosimo I de’ Medici. The works, directed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, transformed the ancient building into a modern military citadel, equipped with large moats and five bastions. These were Belvedere, Spina, Chiesa, Soccorso and Diacciaia. During construction, numerous historic buildings, including the Town Hall and the old town center, were demolished to create an esplanade to serve military purposes.
From Military Fortress to Public Garden
The Medici Fortress has gone through several phases throughout its history. During the early 19th century, French troops attempted to destroy it using mines, leaving visible blast marks on its western flank. In 1868, the fortress was restored for the first time. Later, purchased by the Fossombroni family, it became the property of the Municipality of Arezzo in 1893, thanks to the will of Count Enrico Fossombroni. In the period 1896-1904, it was transformed into a garden and a place for the public to stroll. Archaeological excavations between 1989 and 1991 unearthed important historical remains, including a 14th-century fortress gate with a statue of St. Michael the Archangel. Further restoration in 2016 uncovered the remains of the church of San Donato in Cremona and a Roman mosaic, thus rededicating the Fortress to the city and its people.
Today the Medici Fortress of Arezzo is not only a monument, but an amazing panoramic spot.

The House of Petrarca in the Old Town of Arezzo, is a 16th-century building, partially rebuilt after a bombing in 1943. Inside are the remains of a 13th-century stately residence, the birthplace of Francesco Petrarca, the famous poet and humanist, in 1304. The Petrarca family, originally from Florence, moved to Arezzo after tumultuous political events, inextricably linking their history to that of the city. After serving as a private residence and the headquarters of the Arezzo Police Headquarters, since 1931 is housing Petrarca’s Academy of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
Art and Cultural Activity
Inside the House are ten valuable paintings. There are works by Guercino and Gian Domenico Cerrini known as Perugino, as well as paintings by Salvi Castellucci. These works come from the Florentine Galleries and the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art of Arezzo. The Petrarca Academy also actively promotes lectures, debates, book presentations and exhibitions, underscoring the House’s role as a hub of Arezzo’s cultural life.
The Library
Petrarca Academy’s library, established in 1830 with volumes from Francesco Redi’s library, has been enriched over time thanks to numerous donations. Today it has more than 20,000 works, including medieval and modern manuscripts, incunabula and rare editions from the 17th and 18th centuries. This library contributes to research and study in the literary and scientific fields, being part of the Arezzo documentary network and the EDIT16 project.
The House of Petrarca is a place where the legacy of the great poet is breathed and Arezzo’s intellectual wealth is explored.

Basilica of San Domenico, one of Arezzo’s most important sacred buildings, began construction in 1275 and was completed in the 14th century. The church, financed by the Ubertini and Tarlati families, hosted -in January 1276- the first conclave in the history of the Church of Rome. Over the centuries the building underwent significant modifications. In the second half of the 16th century,in fact, came the addition of new altars and the covering of the original frescoes. A restoration carried out in the 20th century removed these additions. 14th- and 13th-century frescoes were then discovered! The church’s strong stone Gothic facade includes a bell gable and a modern prothyrum, added in 1936 to protect the frescoes.
Artwork and Frescoes
The interior of the church is decorated with mainly 14th-century frescoes. On the counterfaçade are works by Spinello Aretino and his son Parri di Spinello, including a Crucifixion and stories of various saints. On the right wall of the nave are further frescoes, including works by Parri di Spinello and other artists in poor condition, depicting sacred scenes. The Dragondelli chapel, the only one of its type remaining in the church, is decorated with a fresco by Luca di Tommè. Among the most significant works in the church is the Crucifix painted by Cimabue, considered one of the masterpieces of 13th-century painting. On the left wall of the chancel is the funeral monument of Ranieri degli Ubertini, bishop of Volterra, a work attributed to Gano di Fazio, and in the left apse chapel is a triptych by Giovanni d’Agnolo.

Old Town of Arezzo hosts, in the 14th-century Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the Ivan Bruschi House Museum. This historic home, near the Vasari Loggias, was the residence of Arezzo antiquarian Ivan Bruschi, who died in 1996. The House Museum not only preserves his eclectic private collection, but is also a focal point for significant cultural events such as the Antiques Fair and the Saracen Joust.
