For art and history lovers, the Museum of Medieval and Modern Art in Arezzo is a must-see destination. Located in the heart of the city, this museum is located at 8 Via San Lorentino inside Palazzo Bruni Ciocchi, a historically relevant structure for Arezzo. Originally financed by Donato Bruni, son of the distinguished humanist Leonardo Bruni, the palace later passed to the Ciocchi family of Monte San Savino, then to the Counts Barbolani di Montauto in the 17th century, who carried out extensive renovations.
History of the Palace
From the 19th century, the palace came into the possession of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and was used as a warehouse for the goods of the State Monopoly and the Customs Offices, which is why it is still known as the “Customs Palace.” This rich history makes a visit to the Bruni Ciocchi Palace a journey through time, retracing the steps of ladies, knights, prelates and officials who have inhabited these spaces.
The Museum of Medieval and Modern Art Today
Palazzo Bruni Ciocchi was chosen as the Museum’s headquarters in the 1950s and officially opened in 1972. It covers three floors and houses an important collection of artworks and historical artifacts, as well as a restoration workshop in the former lemon house. The museum’s collections have close ties to the history of Arezzo, many of which come from the collections of the City of Arezzo or the Fraternita dei Laici.
Role of the Fraternita dei Laici
Founded in 1262, the Fraternita dei Laici played a crucial role in financing numerous works of art in the city, including works by Giorgio Vasari. Their legacy continues to keep Arezzo’s connection with its fascinating past alive.
Exploring the Museum of Medieval and Modern Art
The ground floor of the museum features reliefs, medieval and Renaissance sculptures, and stone fragments. The adjacent room displays sculptures from local churches. On the second floor, there are paintings, coins, weapons, jewelry, and frescoes by Spinello Aretino and his son Parri. Prominent works include Giorgio Vasari’s “Convite for the Marriage of Esther and Ahasuerus,” located in one of the corridors. The museum continues with a collection of Italian majolica and concludes on the upper floor with a selection of art objects and weapons up to the 20th century.
